Community4-H named 20 Medina County teens as Outstanding High School Seniors: Eli Blackford, Joshua Everhard and Brianna Stachlerm of Wadsworth; Paige Disbrow, Hannah Echle, Katherine Fike, Dana Geideman-Stout, Katherine Fike, Dana Geideman-Stout, Alexis Markeson, Lauren McGraw, Julie Mikalacki, Carly Papesh, Kellie Reboul, Steven Sablotny and Rachelle Spence, all of Medina; Elizabeth Druesedow of Sharon Center; Victoria Gershom of Spencer; Brittany Gordon of West Salem; Kaitlyn Laugesen of Hinckley; Ashley Lewis of Seville; and Valerie Poludnikiewicz of Brunswick. In addition, Gershom and Sablotny were selected to receive the $750 Stephen F. Joseph Memorial Scholarship for their 4-H involvement.EducationJennifer Hansler, a 2011 graduate of Twinsburg High School, was a first-place winner of the Holocaust Remembrance Project, a national essay contest for high school students that promotes study of the Holocaust. She received a $5,000 scholarship to study politics and international relations at the University of Rochester.Three Akron-area students were among 19 statewide to receive scholarships from the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency. University of Akron biology student Nichole Houze of Navarre; Ashland University environmental science student Mary Cargill of Wadsworth; and University of Toledo chemical engineering student Alison Moscarillo of Hudson all received $2,500 awards. Funding comes from civil penalties collected by Ohio EPA and the Ohio Attorney General’s Office for violations of Ohio’s air and water pollution control laws.The Akron Council of Engineering and Scientific Societies has selected eight teacher projects for $500 awards. The teachers are: Deborah Geffken, Barber Community Learning Center, Akron Public Schools; Betty Indriolo, St. Sebastian School, Akron; Monique Binkley, Garfield High School, Akron; Maginel Natof, Kenmore High School, Akron; Margaret Busker-Postlethwait, Buchtel High School, Akron; David Hardwick, Hyre Middle School, Akron; Josh Oldham, East Community Learning Center, Akron; and Elizabeth Terrill, Buchtel High School, Akron.MilitaryArmy Pvt. Matthew A. Knox, son of Larry and stepson of Dawn Knox of Akron and Andrea Shockey of Hinton, W.Va., graduated from the Direct Fire Infantryman One Station Unit Training at Fort Benning in Columbus, Ga. He is a 2007 graduate of Roane County High School, Spencer, Va.Army Pvt. Kyle R. Patterson, son of Jack and Diane Patterson of Fairlawn, graduated from basic infantry training at Fort Benning in Columbus, Ga.
